Abstract
The universal shipborne automatic identification system (AIS) is a recently introduced system for traffic monitoring and safety at sea. In this paper we investigate the possibility of extending the system to space for global maritime surveillance, and give suggestions for how the system can be optimized for long-range identification and tracking (LRIT).
