Abstract
► Accurate attendance estimates allow for informed resource management decisions. ► In this study we evaluate attendance estimates at beaches in southern California. ► We find that attendance counts are often too high, sometimes by a factor of 5. ► We also find that this bias is not random but correlated with a number of factors. ► We provide recommendations to identify and correct methodological biases.
