Abstract
Research highlights► Respondents are generally very aware of the causes of coastal erosion. ► Long-term environmental change is more difficult to perceive. ► Adaptive methods used by residents are not always appropriate for the type of coastal system and can reduce coast's resilience. ► Awareness of the factors responsible for coastal hazards does not seem sufficient to identify solutions to increase coastal communities' resilience to environmental change. ► Raising awareness in coastal areas about various coastal hazards, and, most importantly, adaptive measures, is still necessary.
