Abstract
Estuary Management Plans and Estuary Partnerships were established at more than 40 English estuaries as a result of English Nature's Estuaries Initiative, which commenced in 1992. This paper explores the genesis of Estuary Partnerships in England, identifies key learning points and explores the influences that have changed coastal zone management in the period 1992–2006. It is concluded that there is a continuing role for Estuary Partnerships and that new projects may be initiated as the need arises. However, the original concept and model have changed in order to remain fit for purpose.
