Abstract

•Three different dynamic compensators based on optimal filtering schemes are designed to improve the response time of Vanadium SPNDs.•Compensator design problems are formulated in a convex optimization framework using linear matrix inequalities (LMIs).•The simulation results show that three compensators all can provide a reasonable balance between response speed and noise suppression.

Vanadium Self-Powered Neutron Detectors (SPNDs) are widely used in a nuclear reactor for flux measurement, but the slow response characteristics of Vanadium SPNDs preclude their direct use for reactor protection and regulation applications. In this paper, three different dynamic compensators based on optimal filtering schemes are designed to improve the response time of Vanadium SPNDs using the dynamic mathematical model of the SPNDs. All these compensator design problems are formulated in a convex optimization framework using linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). The simulation results show that three compensators all can provide a reasonable balance between response speed and noise suppression.
