Abstract

Beryllium will be used as a neutron multiplier in Helium Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB) DEMO blankets. The beryllium thermal conductivity is determining the maximum pebble bed temperature and, therefore, is very important for blanket design. Different grades of beryllium discs were neutron-irradiated at temperatures between 343 and 673 K and at fluences up to 1.6 × 1023 cm−2. At lower irradiation temperatures a significant drop of the beryllium thermal conductivity occurs even after small neutron fluences. With increasing neutron fluence, further moderate decreases of the conductivity are observed. With increasing irradiation temperature, the thermal conductivity further decreases. If the thermal conductivity of the irradiated beryllium is known, the conductivity of irradiated beryllium pebble beds can be assessed using the model suggested in this study.
