The paper focuses on the safety assessment of geological repository intended for the disposal of radioactive waste from various nuclear fuel cycles applied in light water reactors e.g. VVER-440 (Russian design). Our analysis covers the partially closed fuel cycle (IMF) based on inert matrix combined fuel, which is compared to the currently used open fuel cycle (UOX) based on UO2 type of fuel. The procedure of safety assessment of a deep geological disposal was performed using AMBER computer code. The annual effective dose for a member of critical group of people was calculated for a period of time up to 10 million years to show how advanced fuel cycles can modify the performance of the disposal system.
► We performed safety assessment of two different nuclear fuel cycles. ► Partially closed fuel cycle based on inert zirconia matrix combined fuel is compared to the typical uranium oxide fuel. ► Extraordinary chemical stability of zirconia oxides makes this material very attractive for a geological disposal. ► In this study we conclude that advanced nuclear fuel cycle brings a number of advantages in terms of long-term safety.
