Abstract
► We clarify the impact of environmental policy on innovation in the waste sector in Japan. ► Patent data analysis shows a clear influence of policy on innovation activity. ► The results show a decreasing pattern in patent activity once targets have been met. ► The lack of incentives for further innovations suggests a weakness of CaC approaches.
