Abstract
The Indian power sector is a key factor in the development of economic growth rates in the country. Most of the power generating stations in India are based on fossil fuels. Furthermore, there are various issues in the climate changes and global warming. The state of Odisha is located in the eastern part of the India at 17° 49׳ North â22°0 34׳ North Latitude and 81° 29׳ East -87° 29׳ East Longitude with an area of 155,707 sq. km. In this state, people depend on hydroenergy and thermal energy to meet their energy demands. However, currently, not many water reservoirs are available for generating the required power. On the other hand, the thermal power plants are unable to meet their power generation potentials due to shortage of coals. So, an alternative source is required that can fulfill the energy demands. Among all renewable sources, solar energy is abundant and offers a solution to fulfill the demand for energy, reduce fossil fuel emissions and global climate change. This state receives a huge amount of solar energy insolation. This paper highlights the solar energy development in the state of Odisha, the state government supportive policies, the central government supportive policies and the future plans for the implementation of solar energy.
