Abstract
⺠A wild fire in Alaska's boreal forest was started by an undocumented coal seam fire. ⺠Fire spread, wind, lightning, and satellite data revealed the sequence of events. ⺠Coal fires and forest fires have a complex relation, one possibly causing the other. ⺠At high latitudes coal is abundant but high latitude coal fires are poorly understood.
