Abstract

•Poly(phenylenethiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole) copolymer dye was synthesized.•Fluorescence emissions were observed at 467 and 497 nm.•Band gap of the polymer is 2.56 eV.•The conductivity of HCl doped polymer was measured as 1.25 μS/cm.•The polymer is stable up to 200 °C temperature.

In the present work, poly(phenylenethiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole) copolymer dye were synthesized by the reaction of terephthalaldehyde and rubeanic acid. The synthesized copolymer was characterized by different spectroscopic methods and its chemical structure was confirmed. The poly(phenylenethiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole) has alternating units of conjugated phenylene and thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole rings. The cyclic voltammetry, the electrical conductivity and the thermal stability of the copolymer were investigated. The thermal analysis measurements demonstrated that the copolymer was stable up to 200 °C. The ultraviolet and visible absorption spectroscopy experiments showed two maximum absorbances at 264 nm and 485 nm. The copolymer exhibited fluorescence emissions at 467 nm and 497 nm in dimethylsulfoxide solution, by using 380 nm and 420 nm excitations, respectively. The highest occupied molecular orbital, the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and the band gap energies were calculated as −5.19, −2.63 and 2.56 eV. Poly(phenylenethiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole) copolymer is a new semiconductive fluorescent dye material for various electronic and optical applications.
