Abstract

The pigment BaSn1−xTbxO3 was synthesized by addition of Tb4O7 into calcination mixture of SnO2 with either BaCO3 or BaSO4, respectively. Pigments of stoichiometric composition corresponding to x ranging from 0 to 1 were obtained by conventional ceramic method and calcinated at 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, 1500, and 1600 °C. The particle size distribution of all pigments was evaluated as well as the colouration of pigments combined with organic matrix and ceramic glaze, respectively. The colour properties of the raw materials were measured in colour space CIE L∗a∗b∗ under standardized visible light. The particle size was measured and an X-ray diffraction analysis was performed to define character of the new pigments. Pigments of brighter yellow colour were obtained for the Tb concentration 0.2 and 0.3 at calcination temperature 1500 and 1600 °C. Most pigments based on BaCO3 meet given range of the mean particle size distribution d50, which is a necessary condition for the pigments to be applicable in a glaze. X-ray analysis confirmed the perovskite structure of the new pigment.

► The substitution of non-ecological chromate pigments by a BaSn1−xTbxO3 was investigated. ► Pigments were made of BaCO3 (alternatively BaSO4), SnO2, Tb4O7. ► Pigments were applied into organic binder and ceramic glaze. ► X-ray analysis confirmed predicted crystal lattice of the perovskite. ► Pigments of bright yellow colour were obtained.
