Abstract
Both models permit the efficient calculation of the interaction energy, the force, and the torque acting on a small body in an arbitrary external gravitational potential. We test both models for the cases of a triaxial ellipsoid, a rectangular parallelepiped, and “duplex” combinations of two spheres, all in a point-mass potential. These examples were chosen in order to compare the accuracy of our technique with known analytical results, but the ellipsoid and duplex are also useful models for comets and asteroids. We find that both approaches show significant promise for more efficient gravitational simulations of binary asteroids, for example. An appendix also describes the duplex model in detail.
