► Use near-infrared spectra for evidence of minerals indicative of paleolakes. ► CRISM data yield hydrated/hydroxylated minerals in two putative martian paleolakes. ► Spatial distributions suggest hydrated/hydroxylated mineral formations differ. ► Neither site requires the presence of a paleolake.
