Abstract
The theoretical background for searching for new nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals in borate compounds is briefly reviewed. Several examples are given that clearly show the benefit of the theoretical understanding of the development of new NLO crystals, and the possible routes to next-generation NLO crystals in VUV and IR spectral regions are discussed.
