Abstract

The effect of Cr doping at the Mn site in Gd0.7Ca0.3MnO3 has been explored through detailed study of the magnetic properties. All the samples crystallize in orthorhombic structure with the Pnma space group. Replacement of the Jahn–Teller (JT) active Mn3+ ion by non-JT active Cr3+ ion causes increase in the value of the lattice parameter b. The paramagnetic–ferrimagnetic (PM–FiM) transition is marked by well-defined peaks (say at Tmax) in the temperature dependent ac susceptibility data for all the samples. The maximum value of susceptibility as well as the value of Tmax increases up to a Cr concentration (x=0.2) and then decreases with further Cr content. Interestingly, due to Cr substitution, the value of negative magnetic moment in field cooled (FC) process in Gd0.7Ca0.3MnO3 below the magnetic ordering temperature shifts gradually towards positive value and finally disappears.

► Magnetic properties of Cr doping at the Mn site in Gd0.7Ca0.3MnO3 has been studied. ► With the increase of Cr doping the magnetic order changes to a glass like state. ► The magnetization reversal is suppressed due to Cr doping at the Mn site.
