Abstract
The single hole-doped CuO2CuO2 plane is studied within the O(3) non-linear σσ model and its CP1CP1 representation. It is argued that the spin configuration around a Zhang–Rice singlet is described by a half-skyrmion. The excitation spectrum of the half-skyrmion has the same form as that of the quasiparticles in the ππ-flux phase. The effective theory of the half-skyrmions is given by (2+12+1)-dimensional quantum electrodynamics.
