Abstract

Different nanoparticle sizes of cadmium and zinc sulfide were prepared by solvothermal route. The morphology and particle size were studied by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The particle size was calculated using Scherrer equation and correlated with the particle size calculated from TEM data. The particle size was increased with increasing the two prepared temperature and the two samples contain cubic crystal lattice. The vibrational modes of Cd–S and Zn–S were studied in the wavenumber range (600–150 cm−1) using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The optical properties were obtained from UV–Vis spectra and the sharp absorption band in the shorter wavelength indicates to the confinement of electrons and holes producing excitonic and Columbic attraction for the two samples. The optical band gap was calculated and compared with the band gap of bulk.
