Abstract
Negative refraction of a one-dimensional multilayered periodic composite is proposed theoretically and simulated numerically. The simulation results from the three-layer periodic composite demonstrate the negative refraction. We also find that when the unit cell is composed of three layers with negative permittivity, with negative permeability, and with a right-handed material, respectively, more negative indexes of refraction can be easily obtained simply by tuning the refractive index and the thickness of the right-handed layer. This will be attractive for the design of the left-handed materials at optical wavelengths.
