Abstract
This paper presents a brief review of the use of position-sensitive detectors in positron emission tomography (PET) together with an overview of the near-future perspectives. Special attention is given to the development of a new class of magnetic field-compatible solid state photodetectors, the so-called silicon photomultipliers (SiPM).
