Abstract

This paper presents the growth of negative ions (F−, Cl−, I− and S2−)-doped PbWO4 crystals by the modified Bridgman method and the influence of negative ions doping on the scintillation properties of PbWO4 crystals. Based on the results of measuring the optical transmission, X-ray excited luminescence, light yield and decay time of negative ion-doped and non-doped PbWO4 crystals, it can been seen that at the concentration involved in the study F− ion greatly increased the luminescence intensity and light yield of PbWO4 crystals. Compared to non-doped PbWO4 crystals, however, F− doping results in a relatively slower decay component. The doping of Cl− and I− ions causes no evidently positive improvement on the scintillation properties of PbWO4 crystals, and doping of S2− ion jeopardizes the scintillation properties of PbWO4 crystals.
