Abstract

The tachyon hypothesis is investigated without recourse to any particular dynamical theory. Considering the results of all previous experiments, the possibility exists for a small tachyon–photon coupling within certain assumptions. These assumptions and their ramifications are spelled out. In particular, the effective charge viewpoint is adopted for tachyons as the means of coupling to photons. A proposed electron accelerator experiment to search for tachyons is described in detail. Other experimental approaches, with a minor difference to the effective charge assumption, are also discussed.
