Abstract
This is an informal overview of the mechanisms involved in detecting photons and charged particles when using a gas as sensitive medium. Emphasis is put on those aspects where further measurements would be welcome. For a fuller account, see the paper of Igor Smirnov [I.B. Smirnov, Nucl. Intstr. and Meth. A 554 (2005) 474].
