Abstract
A determination of the exact statistical limits in the accuracy of time measurements in scintillation counters is presented. An expression for the variance of the timing distribution, where the number of photons in the signal is fixed, is first derived. This leads to an expression for the case where the total number of photons in the emission is randomized in accordance with Poisson statistics.
