A series of experiments on the interactions between external resonant magnetic perturbations (RMP) and plasmas has recently been conducted, using static resonant magnetic perturbation (SRMP) coils on the Joint Texas Experimental Tokamak (J-TEXT). The tearing mode can be completely suppressed by applying SRMP. However, the locked mode is likely to be stimulated under a larger SRMP field even though the tearing mode has been first suppressed. A numerical simulation shows three typical regimes of RMPʼs effects on the tearing mode, which are consistent with experimental results.
► Tearing mode suppression by resonant magnetic perturbation has been observed. ► Locked mode following tearing mode suppression has been found on J-TEXT. ► Simulation shows three typical regimes of RMP effects.
