•Experimental results of OSL measurements with the new stimulation method using the continuous energy scan.•Effects consistent with the earlier theoretical expectations observed in the experiments carried out for quartz.•Description of the equipment specially designed for the new type of stimulation.
A new method of OSL stimulation using the continuous increase of stimulation energy (VES-OSL) has been previously suggested. Earlier computer simulations showed that this type of stimulation results in a peak-shaped OSL curve that closely resembles the TL peak. VES-OSL measurements were performed using a stimulation source that was specially constructed for this purpose, and the equipment is described in detail. The first results of these measurements are presented for quartz samples and the behaviour of the VES-OSL curves obtained is consistent with earlier theoretical expectations.
