Abstract
⺠A variational approximation is developed for a DNLS equation with extended coupling. ⺠Solutions with trivial and nontrivial phase distribution are accurately captured. ⺠Bifurcations of several species of solutions are investigated. ⺠Simple formula to predict critical bifurcation parameter values is derived.
