Abstract
In this note I explain how the index theory of Toeplitz and Wiener-Hopf operators, which was applied by Angas Hurst and co-workers to quantum field theory in the late 70s and early 80s of the previous century, relates to some recent results in noncommutative geometry and motivates some research questions.
