Abstract
⺠We examine the stability of periodic traveling waves in the sine-Gordon equation. ⺠We relate the eigenvalue problem of periodic traveling waves to Hill's equation. ⺠We establish the instability of three of the four types of waves that arise.⺠We establish the spectral stability of the remaining type of wave.
