Abstract
The paper revisits the transient plane strain problem for an elastic half-space subject to a line force moving with uniform speed along the surface. The motion of the half-space is governed by the simplified equations in an asymptotic theory recently suggested for the Rayleigh wave. Explicit formulae are derived for the displacement field including its components associated with rigid body motion. Comparison with the exact integral solution of the original problem establishes the validity range of the approximate model.
