Abstract
Liquid–liquid equilibria (LLE) were determined for ternary systems {methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) + methanol + 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Bmim][BF4])}, {MTBE + ethanol + [Bmim][BF4]}, {MTBE + methanol + 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate (EMISE)} and {MTBE + ethanol + EMISE} at 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure. The experimental apparatus used a jacketed glass equilibrium cell. The experimental data were correlated with the well-known nonrandom two-liquid (NRTL) and universal quasi-chemical (UNIQUAC) activity coefficient models. In addition, the distribution coefficients and the selectivity of the imidazolium-based ionic liquids to methanol and ethanol in the MTBE phase were determined.
