Abstract

The solubilities of pyrene in methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, propanone, toluene, ethyl acetate and oxacyclopentane were determined at temperatures between 293 K and 333 K. The experimental data were correlated with the Apelblat model. The calculated values of Apelblat model were found to show a fine representation of the experimental data. Then the dissolution enthalpy and entropy of pyrene were predicted from the solubility data using van’t Hoff equation.

► The solubilities of pyrene in different solvents are a function of temperature, and it increases with an increase in temperature. ► The mole fraction solubility of pyrene in alcohols is much smaller than that in other solvents. The solubility increases with the solvents in the order: alcohols, propanone, ethyl acetate, toluene, oxacyclopentane. ► The calculated solubility of pyrene sets a good coherence with the experimental values. ► The dissolution enthalpy and entropy of pyrene were predicted from the solubility data using van’t Hoff equation.
