Abstract

This work reports gas solubility data and Henry's constants for carbon dioxide in pure water and ethanol and in their mixtures. For this purpose, a simple laboratory apparatus containing a glass equilibrium cell was constructed and the methodology consisted basically in injecting and storing the gas into the system at a pre-established pressure and then allow the gas dissolution. The liquid phase compositions were calculated through an iterative procedure considering the validity of Henry's law for the liquid phase fugacity of the lighter component. The experiments were performed in the temperature range of 288–323 K, up to 6 atm in pure solvents and at various ethanol–water mixture compositions. From the experimental gas–liquid equilibrium data, P–x diagrams, excess Henry's constants as well as partial molar enthalpy and entropy of solution have been determined.
