Abstract

Long-term immunogenicity of a single TBE booster in persons with a complete primary tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) immunization (and additional regular boosters) more than 3 years after primary or booster TBE immunization was measured by neutralization test (NT). During this follow-up study, blood draws were taken 2, 3, and 4 years post-booster vaccination. Four years following booster immunization (Encepur®, Chiron Vaccines, Marburg), 198 subjects returned for a blood draw. NT geometric mean titers (GMTs) were 82.5 (95% CI: 70.3–96.8) in subjects <60 years of age (n=143) and 52.0 (95% CI: 42.6–63.5) in persons ⩾60 years (n=55), revealing a significant difference (p=0.017). For persons <50 years of age, the seroprotection rate (SPR) was 95.7%, for subjects 50–60 years, SPR was 93.0%, and it was 91.7% for those >60 years of age. These data reveal that a single TBE booster vaccination following an interval of >3 years is highly effective in evoking a strong and long-lasting anamnestic response. However, the parameter age strongly influences SPR and GMTs; hence, age-specific recommendations for booster intervals are indicated.
