Abstract
We have demonstrated a direct association between α5β1 integrin and caspase 3, both pro- and mature enzyme, in various sub-cellular compartments of rat fibroblasts undergoing anoikis. Integrin associated caspase 3 showed high activity in the plasma membranes, whereas in the cytosol and microsomal fraction it showed little or no activity. Our results suggest a possible role for recycled un-ligated α5β1 integrin molecules between cytosol and plasma membrane, in regulation of caspase-3 activity and induction of cell death in adhesion-deprived cells.
