Abstract
The matrix metalloproteinases are a family of matrix degrading enzymes that are important regulators of extracellular matrix remodelling and cellular function. This article presents a review of the mechanisms through which MMPs are regulated including transcriptional, post-transcriptional and post-translational events. Regulation of MMPs within the cardiovascular system and their contribution to physiological and pathological events will be discussed.
