Abstract

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a major group of proteases known to regulate the turnover of extracellular matrix and so they are suggested to be important in the process of lung disease associated with tissue remodelling. These lead to the concept that modulation of airway remodelling, including excessive proteolysis damage of the tissue, may be of interest for future treatment. There is a great need for relevant models and more information is required regarding the involvement of MMPs in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
