Abstract
It is well recognised that an aberrant immune response to certain aerosolised allergens and pathogens can result in the impairment of lung function that is associated with asthma. Great advances have been made in our understanding regarding the role that immune cells, their surface molecules and soluble mediators play in causing this decline in lung function. This knowledge, coupled with significant technological advances in the ability to target molecules both inside and outside these immune cells, has resulted in the discovery and early development of exciting new therapeutic strategies for the treatment of asthma.
