Abstract

The FT-IR spectra for two chelating metal ion extractants: 2-hydroxy-5-nonylacetophenone oxime (HNAF) and 1-phenyldecane-1,3-dion (β-diketone), two solvating extractants: trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) and tri-butyl phosphate (TBP), an acidic extractant di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and a modifier (decanol) were presented. Moreover, five equimolar binary mixtures of extractant/extractant and extractant/modifier type were considered. The interaction between the extractant molecules in the mixed adsorption monolayer formed at the liquid/liquid interface of model extraction systems with the modifier or other extractants were discussed. The usefulness of the spectral technique (FT-IR) in investigating new ligand association adducts between extractants and modifiers or two extractants formed in a binary mixture and the formation of self-association adducts of the extractant molecules were presented.
