Abstract

•SRT interacts stronger with DM-βCD than with βCD.•The aromatic parts of SRT are included inside cavities of examined cyclodextrins.•Equilibrium of inclusion proceeds fast in both systems.•Enthalpic and entropic effects make a contribution to SRT association with CDs.

The interaction of sertraline hydrochloride (SRT) with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and heptakis(2,6-di-O-methyl)-β-cyclodextrin (DM-β-CD) in aqueous solutions was investigated using the methods of isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and UV–Vis spectroscopy. The interaction parameters, such as the association constant, enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs energy of complexation of SRT by β-CD and DM-β-CD in water at T = 298.15 K have been evaluated. Both enthalpic and entropic effects make a contribution to SRT association with β-CD or DM-β-CD.
