Abstract
Transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-β1) plays a key role in cardiovascular disease by a process which allows the loss of its protective properties. The first therapeutic attempt to restore its function by selectively designed novel drugs are being made. In addition, it has been recognized that the TGF-β1 pathway is involved in the vascular mechanism of action of some current clinical drugs, such as acetylsalicylic acid, thiazolidinediones and statins. The aim of this paper is to review the possible value of TGF-β1 as both a disease marker and a therapeutical target for cardiovascular disease.
