Abstract

•MgONF modified CPE is used for first time in the determination of ezetimibe.•Modified electrode exhibits catalytic effect towards the electro-oxidation of Ezetimibe.•This method is used for the determination of Ezetimibe in pharmaceutical preparations.

In the present work, magnesium oxide nanoflakes (MgONF) were synthesized using cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) in a co-precipitation method. The prepared MgONF were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). They were used for the preparation of modified carbon-paste electrode and successfully used to study the electrochemical behavior of ezetimibe (Eze) in phosphate buffer solution (PB, pH 7.0) by cyclic voltammetric technique (CV). The results show that MgONF-modified CPE can remarkably enhance the electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of Eze. The effect of pH and scan rate was also investigated. A linear relationship was obtained between the anodic peak current and the Eze concentration in the range 2 × 10− 7 to 1.0 × 10− 5 M with a correlation co-efficient of 0.999. The detection limit (LOD) and quantification limit (LOQ) at MgONF-modified CPE were found to be 5 × 10− 8 and 2 × 10− 7 M respectively by differential pulse voltammetric technique (DPV). The proposed method was successfully applied for the determination of Eze in commercial tablet sample.
