The Amberlite XAD-16-pyridylazo resorcinol resin (AXAD-16-PAR) has been synthesized and characterized by both FT-IR spectra and scan electron microscope besides elemental chemical analysis. The optimization of U(VI) sorption conditions by the prepared resin is determined by the batch equilibrium method and the obtained maximum practical sorption capacity has been found to attain 115.5 mg g−1. The thermodynamic data showed positive values of ΔH and ΔS indicating that the sorption process is indeed endothermic and random respectively while the negative values of ΔG indicate that U(VI) sorption is spontaneous whereas the kinetic data were found to fit well with the pseudo-second order model. In the meantime, the Langmuir isotherm model has been found to be more suitable for explaining the sorption process. It has also been indicated that the loaded uranium(VI) can effectively be desorbed up to about 99% by 0.5 M HNO3 acid concentration. Finally, the obtained results have been applied for U(VI) recovery from a prepared pregnant leach solution of El Sela mineralization.
