•The effect of transition metal addition on the BiFe0.65Me0.05Mo oxide catalyst was studied in the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of butenes.•BiFe0.65Ni0.05Mo oxide catalyst shows excellent activity for the ODH reaction.•The yield of butadiene (BD) is correlated with the facile oxygen mobility.•1-Butene is more favorable for producing BD than the 2-butenes.
BiFe0.65Me0.05Mo oxide catalysts promoted with different metals (Me = Ni, Co, Zn, Mn and Cu) were prepared and the effects of the transition metal addition based on multicomponent BiFeMo oxide catalysts have been investigated for the oxidative dehydrogenation of butenes to 1,3-butadiene. It has been found that the catalytic activity of BiFe0.65Me0.05Mo oxide catalysts depends on the nature of the metals employed, varying in the order of Ni > Co > Zn > Mn > Cu. Temperature-programed re-oxidation measurements revealed that the catalytic activity of the BiFe0.65Me0.05Mo oxide catalysts was well correlated with the oxygen mobility of the catalysts.
