Abstract

•Carbon dioxide injection and gas flow in a large-scale physical experiment are modelled.•Gas pressure changes are mainly decided by the boundaries and earth stress.•Gas concentration correlates with the areas of high earth stress.•Stresses and deformations along three real directions are added and investigated.•Coal matrix chronologically includes compressive and swelling deformation after CO2 injection.

In this paper, CO2 injection and subsequent gas flow in a coal matrix are modelled by a large-scale physical experiment. CO2 transport in porous media after gas injection is investigated in terms of three aspects: (1) the spatio-temporal volumetric strain of the coal matrix caused by CO2 injection; (2) gas pressure changes or redistribution in the coal matrix resulting from the gas flow; and (3) thermal analysis of the coal matrix during the injection process.
