•NaCl enlarged yield of both elemental and pre-alloyed powders after ball milling.•Pure ß phase was stabilized in ball-milled Ti–40Nb powder after quenching.•The correlation between oxygen amount in milled powder and initial powders was found.•The occurring phase transformations were confirmed by TEM and XRD.
The purpose of the present paper is to demonstrate the possibility of obtaining single phase β-type Ti–Nb powders by ball milling. The influence of milling parameters, degree of oxidation and initial powders morphology have been studied. The produced powder can be further used to synthesize compacts with a very low Young's modulus for biomedical applications.
Graphical abstractThe present work demonstrates two ways to stabilize the low Young's modulus ß-phase at room temperature and a successful route to reduce the oxidation of the ball-milled powder.Figure optionsDownload full-size imageDownload as PowerPoint slide
