Abstract

A simple C0 finite element formulation with embedded higher-order shear deformation theory and a 3-dimensional state of stress and strain for thick and thin laminated composite plates has been presented. The assumed displacement model accounts for parabolic variation of transverse shear strains and linear variation of normal strain through the plate thickness and therefore does not require any shear correction factors. The accuracy and validity of the present element has been established through numerical evaluation of deformation and stresses against convergence study and also plate bending response under various loading, boundary conditions and lamination types. The comparison of results from the present analysis with that of other available analytical/3D elasticity solutions and published finite element results correspond fairly well.
