Abstract

•Utilizing Chinese Larch (Larix gmelinii) as the dimension lumber.•Compression strength parallel to grain (UCS) for Larch 2 × 4 lumber based on full-size test.•First-order second-moment reliability analyses for all data cells and simulation load cases.•Prediction of the design value of UCS.

The objective of this study was to obtain the design value of compression strength parallel to grain (UCS) for Larch 2 × 4 lumber based on full-size test results. A total of 1043 samples were tested by static compression. The results of reliability analysis indicated that the reliability index decreased nonlinearly as both the UCS design value increased and the live-to-dead load ratio decreased. To meet the requirements of the minimum reliability index, this study suggests that design values be set to 18.6, 15.4, 13.8, and 12.6 MPa for grades SS, No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3, respectively.
