Pongamia pinnata (L.) Pierre popularly known as ‘Karanj’ or ‘Karanja’ in Hindi, Indian beech in English is a medium-sized glabrous tree. The objective of the present investigation was to evaluate analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity of PPSBAE in laboratory animals. Analgesic activity was carried out by acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing and hot plate test in mice at the dose level of 100, 300 and 1000 mg/kg. Anti-inflammatory activity was carried out by carrageenan (acute) and cotton pellet granuloma (chronic) tests in rats. Serum TNF-α and IL-1β were measured by ELISA. The observed results suggested the PPSBAE showed significant analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity. PPSBAE decreased serum TNF-α and IL-1β in acute as well as chronic anti-inflammatory studies.
