Abstract
Development of the swan neck deformity in rheumatoid arthritis is a complicated process caused by abnormalities in the structure of the PIP joint and abnormalities in the forces on the joints of the finger. Surgical treatment relies on controlling or reversing these abnormalities. Four clinical groups are described and the indications for surgical treatment of each group are presented.
